Fears are growing for the safety of a Russian journalist who was arrested after hijacking a state-controlled television news broadcast to protest against the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine.
Marina Ovsyannikova burst into a television studio yesterday evening during a live broadcast of Vremya, a news programme that has millions of viewers. She waved a placard written in a mix of English and Russian which read: “No war. Stop the war. Don’t believe the propaganda. They lie to you here. Russians against war.”
Ovsyannikova, who has two children, was arrested after her protest. Daniil Berman, her lawyer, said he had not been able to determine her whereabouts. She could now face up to 15 years in prison on charges of spreading “fake news” about the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine, the Tass news agency reported, citing a source.
